![]() ![]() Both were dropped in previous model years, so your only option now is an uninspiring (but efficient) 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Prior to the Equinox's mid-cycle refresh, it offered an odd diesel engine option and even had a 2.0-liter turbo option that made it one of the most powerful vehicles in the segment. Most of its key elements like passenger space, fuel economy, power and more are merely average at best, and there is very little that truly sets it apart from the rest. It's a bland vehicle with little to excite or offend from the curb. There's no shortage of choices in the compact SUV space, and the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox quite frankly gets lost in the scrum. You can read more about the 2023 Chevrolet Equinox in our exclusive driven review.2022 Chevrolet Equinox Review | Updated yet still innocuous The Equinox is treated to a mid-cycle update, but it's no game-changer Against the competition, the Equinox hardly stands head-and-shoulders above many models, but it is still competent overall and presents a value proposition for those looking to put a compact crossover on their driveway with limited funds. However, the Equinox does offer relatively low pricing through its range, and with many features only available as optional, those looking for a more basic compact SUV that still includes a sufficient list of amenities can save some coin at the dealership. Several other models also offer more creature comforts and active driver safety features as standard. For instance, the Nissan Rogue and Toyota RAV4 hold about seven more cubic-feet of cargo space while the Tucson and CR-V hold nearly 10 more cubes than the Chevy. Some of the Equinox’s rivals also offer more cargo space. The 2023 Chevy Equinox has plenty of opposition in the highly competitive compact crossover segment, competing against the heavy hitters like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-50, Kia Sportage, Nissan Rogue, Mitsubishi Outlander, Subaru Outback, Ford Escape, and others.Īgainst its rivals, the Chevy offers a lackluster powertrain - it’s 175 horsepower is far more than the 152-hp in the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, but otherwise, most models have 185 to 205 horsepower and either a CVT or more gears. The following exterior colors are available for the 2023 Equinox with Radiant Red, Sterling Gray Metallic and Harvest Bronze Metallic new for this year: These features, with 19-inch wheels replacing the 18-inch versions, are standard on the RS trim along with a host of interior upgrades. The Sport Edition includes the same equipment save for the black exterior paint. The Midnight Edition, as its name suggests, includes blacked-out features like the Chevy bowtie emblems, black 18-inch aluminum wheels with blackwall tires, a black grille and mesh, and body-color mirror caps. The base LS model can be fitted with either the Midnight Edition or Sport Edition Packages. Its flowing character line in profile is also a distinctive feature that ups the Equinox’s attractiveness. The updated front fascia includes slightly larger and more distinguished headlights, faux intakes have replaced the lower front lights (which are now vertical), and the rear end is sharper and more handsome with a revised bumper. The front-wheel-drive Equinox is rated for 28 combined mpg while all-wheel drive drops that figure to 26 combined (30 highway, 24 city). The Equinox’s 1.5-liter has been criticized for its “ sluggish performance” and lackluster acceleration with a 0-60 mph time of a rather pedestrian 8.0 seconds.īut for those more interested in ride quality and efficiency over pure power, the Equinox is a relatively comfortable cruiser with a smooth ride, predictable handling with adequate feel, and with its modest powertrain, it returns decent fuel economy. ![]() Its 175 horsepower trails all the major players in the segment - the Nissan Rogue offers 201 horsepower as standard from an inline-three engine, for instance - and with just six gears, taking advantage of its horsepower is a bit more challenging. The 2023 Equinox has a max trailering capacity of 1,500 pounds.Ī sticking point for the Equinox’s overall performance is its lack of grunt. ![]() The Equinox sends its power to the front wheels as standard, but all-wheel drive is available across all four trims. The 1.5-liter engine pairs exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission, forgoing a continuously variable transmission fitted to some competitors.
